Agriculture is a key sector for the economy and a source of livelihood for millions of people in the Black Sea Basin. However, it faces serious threats from climate change – reduced rainfall, water scarcity, longer periods of drought, and heatwaves. These factors weaken the productivity and resilience of the sector and place farmers under increasing pressure.

To address these challenges, three organizations from Türkiye, Bulgaria, and Greece have joined forces in the initiative “Interregional Cooperation for Climate Adaptation in Agriculture (ADAPTAGRI).” The project aims to develop and implement innovative solutions that promote smart and environmentally friendly agricultural practices, leading to more sustainable food production systems and greater adaptability to climate change.

Over 18 months, ADAPTAGRI will carry out a range of activities, including:

  • Establishing a BSB platform for smart and environmentally sustainable agriculture as a regional network for knowledge exchange and collaboration;

  • Conducting research, analyses, and surveys on smart and eco-friendly agricultural practices;

  • Developing recommendations for local and national policies aligned with the principles of green agriculture;

  • Implementing pilot programs for financial and technical support in the Thrace region;

  • Organizing trainings, webinars, and creating a mentoring network for farmers and agro-experts;

  • Producing informational materials and videos to promote sustainable practices and technologies.

The project focuses on the regions of Thrace (Turkey), Evros (Greece), and Dobruja (Bulgaria), but through its activities, it will extend its impact across the entire Black Sea Basin.

ADAPTAGRI is coordinated by the Thrace Development Agency (Turkey), in partnership with the Dobrudzha Agrarian and Business School (Bulgaria) and the Northern Evros Research and Development Company S.A. (Greece).

The initiative is is co-financed by the European Union through the Interreg VI-B NEXT Black Sea Basin 2021–2027 Program. The total budget is €513,814, of which 90% is provided by the European Union.
