QOrganic farmingDoes organic grain production pay off?
Expert answer
In short: It can pay off with a clean field and a good legume preceding crop — roughly €120–150/daa profit with subsidies.
| Indicator (organic wheat "Rada") | Value |
|---|---|
| Costs (seed, tillage, organic fertilisation, certification, harvest) | 68–80 €/daa |
| Yield | 350–550 kg/daa (poor → good year) |
| Purchase price | 0.35–0.43 €/kg (about 2 times higher than conventional) |
| Subsidies (organic + basic payment / eco-schemes) | about 35–50 €/daa |
| Final profit with subsidies | 120–150 €/daa in a normal year |
The figures are examples and depend on the market and the year. A real example: good practice 2 ("Organic Grain", Varna) — spelt, einkorn, wheat and sunflower with cover crops.
