Frequently asked questions
QOrganic farmingHow do I switch to organic production?
Expert answer
In short: Contract with a control body, rotation with legumes, organic fertilisation, mechanical weed control and applying for support.
- Sign a contract with an organic control body approved by the MAF; the conversion period starts from that moment.
- Plan a crop rotation with legumes — for example, a five-year one: lucerne (1–2 years) → wheat → sunflower or chickpea → vetch + oats for green manure.
- Replace synthetic fertilisers with farmyard manure or compost (2–3 t/daa) and nitrogen from the legumes.
- Focus on prevention and mechanical weed control (harrowing, higher seeding rate).
- Apply under the "Organic crop production" intervention (Ordinance No. 9/2023).
Common mistakes
- Converting without a weed plan — weeds are the main problem in organic production.
- Converting without a buyer for the produce.
- Underestimating the conversion period, when costs are organic but prices are conventional.
- No field log and records for the control body.
