QSoilWhat soils are there in Dobrudja and why does it matter for tillage and fertilisation?
Expert answer
In short: Chernozems, vertisols and meadow soils need different tillage and fertilising; specific rates come from the soil analysis.
The choice of tillage, fertilisation and crop starts with the soil. There are three main groups in the region:
| Soil | Where | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Chernozems | Dobrich plateau and northern Dobrudja | Humus layer often over 1 m, high natural fertility. Most rates in the project materials refer to them. Potassium is usually not needed |
| Vertisols | Central and southern parts | Heavy clay — hold water long and compact easily. Do not till at the wrong moisture; not suitable for strip-till |
| Meadow and alluvial soils | Valleys of the Danube, Srebarna and Suha reka | Fertile, but at risk of waterlogging and salinisation in lowlands and coastal areas |
The main risks are water and wind erosion on open land and salinisation in low-lying areas. Loss of organic matter makes crops even more sensitive to drought.
Soil type is only the start — specific rates are set with a soil analysis of your field.
