Frequently asked questions
QFertilisationWhat yield can I expect with balanced fertilisation?
Expert answer
In short: For wheat, balanced fertilisation gives about twice as much as unfertilised (350–500 kg/daa), but more fertiliser is not better.
| Option | Indicative wheat yield, kg/daa |
|---|---|
| No fertiliser | 150–250 |
| Balanced fertilisation | 350–500 |
| Balanced fertilisation in a good year | up to 550 |
The difference between an unfertilised and a balanced-fertilised field is roughly twofold. But more is not better: excess nitrogen causes lodging and yield loss, and late nitrogen leads to poor grain quality.
The preceding crop matters as much as fertilisation: in cereals, much of the yield increase comes from the preceding crop, especially in unfavourable years. After pea, wheat protein is higher than after maize.
