Frequently asked questions
QFertilisationWhy does my wheat lodge or have low protein?
Expert answer
In short: Lodging comes from excess or late nitrogen; protein depends on nitrogen at stem elongation when there is moisture.
Too much nitrogen causes lodging and yield loss. Applying fertiliser too late lowers quality. For protein, nitrogen at stem elongation, when there is moisture, is decisive. Copper (Cu) supports gluten and protein; on calcareous soils apply manganese (Mn), and with slow growth zinc (Zn), as a foliar spray between tillering and stem elongation.
