QCrops & sowingWhen and at what rate should I sow?
Expert answer
In short: Common wheat: 25 September – 10 October, 550–600 seeds per square metre, 4–6 cm; in drought reconsider the rate.
| Crop | Timing (Dobrudzha and Danube Plain) | Rate (viable seeds/m²) | Depth (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Winter common wheat | 25 September – 10 October | 550–600 | 4–6 |
| Durum wheat | 5–10 days after common wheat | 400–600 | 3–5 |
| Multi-row barley | End of September – first ten days of October | 400–450 | 4–6 |
| Two-row barley | Early to mid-October | 350–450 | 4–6 |
| Winter rye | End of September – October | 400–450 | 3–5 |
| Winter oats | End of September – October | 400–500 | 3–5 |
| Maize | April – early May (8–10 °C in the soil) | 6–9 plants/m² | 4–6 |
In a drought it is worth reconsidering the rate: a thinner stand gives each plant more moisture and nutrients and improves root development. Good practice 5 (Agro – Svetlozar Dichevski sole trader, Varna) does this, which also cuts seed costs.
